Support Black-Owned Businesses for Black History Month

As Black History Month kicks off, we may not be able to hold any in person events, there are numerous ways we can honor and support the significant achievements and contributions of Black leaders today and everyday.

From supporting Black-owned restaurants and small businesses to donating to organizations supporting Black initiatives we're passionate about in tech, healthcare and veteran care. Although it is Black History Month, we should also support black-owned businesses throughout the year.

This month is also an opportunity to continue reading, listening and learning from Black authors and activists that are offering resources in anti-racism, equity and equality.

How to Support Black-Owned Businesses

1. Support Black-Owned Restaurants in your local areas

Advantis loves having team virtual lunches, ordering in from local restaurants and treating our clients to delicious meals. In being more intentional with our spending we are encouraging our teams to support local Black-Owned restaurants throughout our Advantis offices in the Bay Area, Silicon Valley, Los Angeles, San Diego and Austin.

Consider using the EatOkra App to find a Black-Owned restaurant near you.

Apple Maps Customers can enjoy curated Apple Maps Guides created in collaboration with EatOkra, a Black-owned business directory app based in Brooklyn, New York. EatOkra works with local chefs to provide a food-themed directory of Black-owned restaurants in local communities.

2. Buy Client or Team Gifts from Black-Owned businesses

We love celebrating team milestones and client partnerships often at Advantis. An awesome opportunity to be more intentional with our gift giving is to shop local and to support Black-Owned business whenever possible. Here are a few gift ideas we love:

3. Donate to organizations that support Black Equity and Equality

We are also encouraging our teams to donate to organizations that support anti-racism equity and equality.

Consider donating to the following orgs we are passionate about:

Black Girls Code
LoveLand Therapy Fund
Black Mamas Matter Alliance
Black Veterans Project

4. Continue to purchase, listen to, read and share books by Black authors

Advantis condemns racism and are committed to doing better everyday. While we continue to build a workforce that is more diverse, equitable, and inclusive we are open to more learning from Black authors, activists and leaders. We are excited for Apple Books highlight this month.

A broad new collection on Apple Books will highlight great books and audiobooks by Black authors across a variety of genres, including literary fiction, history, memoirs, and books for young readers. Apple Books will also put a spotlight on both authors and narrators, with a special feature in which new authors, such as Jordan Ifueko, Robert Jones Jr., and Brandon Taylor, discuss their recent releases, and another feature in which celebrated audiobook narrators, including Adjoa Andoh, Guy Lockard, and Bahni Turpin, dive into some of their favorite narrating experiences.
